Paycheck budgeting: know what's safe to spend until payday.
A lot of money stress lives in the days before payday. Paycheck budgeting plans each paycheck as it lands, and safe to spend tells you what's actually yours to use until the next one.

What safe to spend means
Safe to spend is your balance minus everything that's already spoken for before your next paycheck:
- bills due before payday
- buy now, pay later installments and minimum payments
- what you're setting aside for goals
- a buffer you choose, for surprises
What's left is money you can spend without touching rent money. It's not a budget category or a guess, and it changes the moment anything else does.
An example
Payday is nine days away, and checking has $1,640.
| Amount | |
|---|---|
| Checking balance | $1,640.00 |
| Phone bill, due Friday | -$65.00 |
| Car insurance | -$142.00 |
| Afterpay installment | -$37.50 |
| Klarna installment | -$25.00 |
| Set aside for a goal | -$100.00 |
| Buffer | -$200.00 |
| Safe to spend | $1,070.50 |
That's about $119 a day until payday, with every bill and installment already covered.
A plan for every paycheck
When a paycheck lands, Budvo turns it into a checklist that adds up to the cent:
- Bills, minimums and installments due before the next payday.
- Your buffer and emergency fund.
- What each goal needs from this paycheck to finish on time.
- Everything left goes to the debt that costs you most.
Tick lines off as you move the money. If something changes, the plan reflows.
Why plan per paycheck, not per month
Bills arrive on their own dates, and paychecks don't care what month it is. If you're paid every two weeks, two months a year have three paydays, and a monthly budget hides that extra paycheck. Planning each paycheck as it comes keeps every bill matched to the money that will pay it.
When a big decision comes up
- What if: lay a new bill, a new income or an early payoff over your calendar and see what happens to safe to spend and your debt-free date before anything is saved.
- Got extra money? A refund or a bonus gets a recommendation: free up a monthly payment, save the most interest or keep a cushion.
- Can I afford this? Check a new place against what you actually spend, the landlord's income rule (many ask for about three times the rent) and the move-in money.
Questions
Good to know
Is safe to spend the same as my balance?
No. Your balance includes money that's already promised to bills, installments, goals and your buffer before payday. Safe to spend is what's left after all of that.
What if I'm paid every two weeks?
Budvo plans each paycheck as it comes, so it works the same for weekly, every two weeks, twice a month or monthly pay. In months with a third paycheck, that paycheck gets its own plan, often with a lot left for debt or savings.
What's a buffer?
An amount you choose that safe to spend never counts, a cushion for surprises like a higher bill. Budvo warns you when your balance is projected to dip below it.
Is Budvo free?
Yes. The server, the dashboard, the planner and the jar are free to run on your own hardware, with no subscription. Some optional extras cost money to operate, like the push relay for iPhone notifications, and may be paid later. Your data is never the product.
