  1. 0.5.0

    Latest

Statements, more paychecks and loans paid every 2 weeks

Bring in months of history from your bank statements, see what they turn up, and plan around every paycheck in the house. Loans can now be paid every 2 weeks (or weekly, twice a month and more), with the payoff math to match.

    Import your statements

    • Upload statements from Activity: PDF statements, CSV or OFX/QFX/QBO files, many at once (password-protected PDFs too). Budvo reads them on your server, with built-in support for Chase, Capital One, Discover, American Express, SoFi, Citi, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Apple Card, Affirm and Klarna, and a general reader for the rest.
    • Each file is matched to an account (or creates one), and anything already in Budvo, from an overlapping statement, a purchase you entered or a bill you marked paid, is linked instead of added twice. The account's balance and card details are updated from the statement when it's newer.
    • The original statement is kept, encrypted, and every imported transaction links back to it.
    • Scanned statements can be read by the optional budvo-ocr companion, which also runs on your own hardware. See the docs to add it.

    Findings

    • A new Findings tab under Subscriptions looks across all your transactions for double charges, fees (with a script to ask for a refund), interest you paid this year, free trials that turned paid, card payments that never reached the card, yearly charges and price increases. Each one comes with one thing to do about it.
    • The most important one shows up as a single line on Today.

    More than one paycheck

    • Add a paycheck is now on Plan > Paycheck and in Recurring, and Add a paycheck or bill is in the New menu (press R). Two jobs or two people's pay, on different schedules, into different accounts, all work.
    • The paycheck plan names each paycheck, covers until the next paycheck from any of them, and never plans a bill twice, even when two paychecks land the same day.
    • With more than one paycheck, your spending money is set per main paycheck and shared out by the days between paychecks, so a second income doesn't double it. Paycheck splits are set up per paycheck.

Loans paid every 2 weeks, and more

    • Car, student, personal and other loans can be paid every week, every 2 weeks, every 4 weeks, twice a month, monthly or every 3 months.
    • Interest follows how the lender charges it: simple daily interest for car and student loans, monthly for mortgages and most other loans, daily compounding for cards. You can change it under Loan details.
    • Payment dates on the calendar, the paycheck plan, the payoff simulator and payment schedule, the payoff lab, clear by a date and your debt-free date all use it. A $20,000 car loan at 6.9% paid $197.54 every 2 weeks is done about 6 months sooner, with about $390 less interest, than $395.08 a month.

    Subscriptions you already have

    • Bills you've marked as subscriptions, or put in the Subscriptions category, now always show on the Subscriptions tab with your monthly and yearly total, alongside the ones Budvo finds in your spending (never twice).
    • Add from your bills marks existing bills as subscriptions in one step, and Not a subscription takes one back off the list.
    • Lower your bills now lists every subscription, with a script for asking for a better price.

    Moving and recovering

    • Moving to a new server is a browser-only step: export the whole server from Settings, then choose to restore it (or import a household export) right at setup on the new one.
    • Forgot your password? Reset it from the sign-in page with your recovery key (or the database password). It has the strictest rate limit, you see a notice the next time you sign in, and you can make a new recovery key in Settings. The command line still works too.

    Smaller things

    • Names are shown in full instead of being cut off ("Spotif...").

  2. Hello, Budvo

The first public release. Budvo is a calm money planner that runs on your own hardware: it tells you what's safe to spend, plans every paycheck, and gets you out of debt on a date you can see. Your data never leaves your server.

    Know what's safe to spend

    • Safe to spend is one number that already sets aside your bills, debt payments and goals until the next payday.
    • The paycheck plan splits each check across bills, vaults, debts and savings, and shows exactly where every dollar goes.
    • The calendar shows each month's money in and out and whether it ends ahead or short. Try a what if (a purchase, an extra payment, a canceled bill) and watch the month, safe to spend and your debt-free date change.

    Pay off debt, with dates

    • Avalanche, snowball or your own order, with a payoff date for every card and loan and a countdown to debt free.
    • Buy now, pay later plans from Affirm, Klarna, Zip and Afterpay, with payoff quotes and early payoff planning.
    • Clear by a date works out what it takes to be done by the day you pick, and a refinance check tells you when a lower rate is worth it.
    • Credit utilization per card and overall, with what it takes to get under 30%.

    Decide with confidence

    • Can I afford this? compares your plan with and without a purchase. It also handles rent and mortgages: move-in money, what you actually spend, and a rent to look for.
    • Got extra money? shows where a windfall does the most good, and which card tells you which one to use for a purchase.
    • Price in hours shows what something costs in hours of your work.

    The jar

    • A piggy bank for small wins: round-ups, no-spend challenges and bets on yourself fill it, and you smash it into a debt or a goal when you're ready.
    • Spend match pledges count against safe to spend, so the jar never promises money you don't have.

    Bills and subscriptions

    • Recurring bills and paychecks post themselves, link to real transactions and remind you before they're due.
    • The subscription radar spots what you pay for every month, and bill negotiation keeps track of the calls that lowered a bill.
    • Calendar sync puts bills, paydays and payoff milestones in the calendar app you already use.

    Make it yours

    • The add-on marketplace has themes, small games and extras. Add-ons run in a sandbox, ask before they do anything, and never see more than you allow.
    • Light and dark mode, privacy mode to hide amounts, and a household you can share with a partner.

    Private and locked down

    • The whole database is encrypted, not just a few columns. Its key is protected by your database password and your recovery key, and neither is ever stored in plain form.
    • Setup takes about two minutes: the one-time code from docker logs budvo, a database password (type one or let Budvo make one), your recovery kit to save offline, and your account.
    • After every restart the server starts locked until you unlock it with the database password or the recovery key. Changing the password is instant: it rewraps the key and never re-encrypts the data.
    • Sign-in passwords are hashed with Argon2id and attempts are rate limited. Add two-factor with any authenticator app (with backup codes), plus passkeys.
    • Locked out? budvo-server recover resets your sign-in from the server itself, but only with the database password or recovery key.
    • Automatic encrypted backups before every update and database change, and one-click updates that show these notes first.
